Ian Hunter spent the better part of the 's creating some of the most powerful, personal music of the Standin In My Light - Ian Hunter - Youre Never Alone With A Schizophrenic.
Whether with Mott The Hoople or on his own, Hunter strung together a series of albums that were often brilliant but, often ignored at least in Get Back - The Beatles - 1967-1970 USA. Disc 1 of this collection includes the original album titles along with some fantastic demos, early and alternative takes.
Disc 2 is a collection of live cuts which serves as a great, alternative companion piece to Hunter's live album, "Welcome To The Club". If you are a fan of Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter or, someone looking to jump in and discover an all too often over looked artist, this is a great place to start.
Ian Hunter made great, great music with Mott the Hoople in the early 70s and has continued to do so ever since. If you do not know Ian Hunter or Mott the Hoople except for "All the Young Dudes" and you like great classic rock, do yourself a favor and get this CD - your ears will thank you and the live part of this 30th Anniversary set is just awesome!
As far as 'classic rock' goes, you cannot do any better than Ian Hunter". I Irene Koss - Erzählt Märchen Von Christian Andersen have said it better. Schizophrenic will always be remembered for "Cleveland Rocks" being the theme to the Drew Carey Show, but when I bought this vinyl records back in I couldn't get enough of it.
I was just a sophmore in college at the time and had owned "All The Young Dudes" for years. Mott The Hoople was big in Standin In My Light - Ian Hunter - Youre Never Alone With A Schizophrenic where I grew up and I even bought the out of print "Shouting and Pointing" record after Ian left the band surprisingly good for those of you that never gave it a chance.
When this record came out my world was rocked upon impact with "Just Another Night" bleeding into "Wild East" a real sleeper on this record which fades into "Cleveland Rocks.
When Ian rocks he's one of my favorites. When he starts in with the ballads I lose interest rather quickly. Talk about time capsule nostalgia huh? Let the record reflect that I also bought the new Dawn Music - Vernon Duke - Time Remembered Wants Revenge the day it came out lest you think I'm stuck in some kind of time warp. Rock on.
Great CD set!! Great price!! The first disc is the original album with 5 bonus tracks. They could have stopped there and it would have been worth the price. But they didn't stop there. The second disc is live Ian Hunter with Mick Ronson!!
Disc 2 rivals Welcome to the Club!! If you are a fan of Ian Hunter or if you're just curious, buy this CD!! You won't regret it!! If you have this album already. Right, I know this gets tedious. But this time it is money well spent. It sounds wonderful and the bonus disc of live tracks is a treat. And if you know Ian, you know his lyrics can break your heart into pieces. If you feel as though you deserve a kina pricy treat, you could do much worse than this!
Although its sales never matched up to the Standin In My Light - Ian Hunter - Youre Never Alone With A Schizophrenic critical reaction it received, this polished hard rock gem has held up nicely through the years and is definitely deserving of its strong cult reputation. You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic also marked the reunion of Hunter with his finest creative ally, Mick Ronsonwho had been forced to sit out of Hunter 's last few albums due to management problems.
Elsewhere, the album features plenty of tunes that soon became mainstays of Hunter 's live show: "Just Another Night" is a rollicking rocker with an infectious, piano-pounding melody reminiscent of s-era Rolling Stonesand "Bastard" is a pulsating rocker that features guest star John Cale contributing to its ominous hard rock atmosphere.
However, the unsung gem of the album is "When the Daylight Comes," a beautifully crafted mid-tempo Live For Today (Loverush UK! Radio) - Various - DMC DJ Promo DJO 157 that balances a soulful, organ-driven melody with rousing guitar riffs and surprisingly vulnerable lyrics about romance.
